Resumen

El petróleo es la principal fuente de energía del mundo. Con el tiempo su explotación y producción ha disminuido lo cual promueve la implementación de novedosas técnicas de extracción que incrementen la eficiencia de extracción. La recuperación mejorada de petróleo con ayuda de microorganismos (MEOR), resulta una opción viable para implementarse en pozos maduros o abandonados que mediante el uso de microorganismos y sus productos metabólicos, tienen la propiedad de disminuir la tensión superficial e interfacial del agua, así como de cambiar la mojabilidad de la roca reservorio que contiene al petróleo residual. La MEOR es una tecnología ambientalmente amigable que permite recuperar porcentajes importantes de hidrocarburos pesados no recuperables por métodos convencionales. El objetivo de este capítulo es describir mediante una revisión bibliográfica la recuperación mejorada de petróleo con ayuda de microorganismos a través de diferentes fuentes de datos.
